Bells chime in the distance, flags ripple in the gentle breeze. For Resort 2022, SIR reinterprets a recurring theme of female sisterhood through a fearless yet nostalgic lens. Captured on the tip of Western Australia, a land of mystical sunrises, crystal-clear waters, rocky cliff faces, and islands made of shells that disappear into the ocean every night, the campaign follows a story of starting over in simpler ways. Anchoring the season's storyline, the landscapes of Western Australia are held in balance by their traditional Aboriginal custodians and elders, and are a place of special significance for SIR founders Nikki Campbell and Sophie Coote.
At this edge of the world, nature is rough, beautiful, yet unforgiving. Our characters appear, fully formed and powerful, echelons of a new civilisation, shape-shifters and bell-makers. This is a story of coming home, finding it in the unlikeliest of places, and protecting it. It is also a moment of departure: born at a time when the world was in confinement, the collection pushes forth with a sense of wanting to reclaim our freedom. Unapologetically Australian, Resort ‘22 draws inspiration from summers past, retelling universal stories of friendship, belonging, friction and togetherness. Sometimes otherworldly, sometimes oddly normal: a makeshift shade tent with the shadows of dancers revelling outside recalls vivid memories of growing up or the appeal of a festival long ago. Balloons anchor in the sand like buoys shipwrecked in time and space, all the while painted canvases, sparklers, and giant bonfires gleam with childlike - albeit much trippier - wonder. Unwavering in their pursuit of a utopian fantasy, our characters often engage in child's play, finding pleasure and freedom in letting go of worldly expectations.
