Information
In April 2021, between two Sydney lockdowns, an ambitious personal project called The House took place in an empty, heritage-listed house in Potts Point with over 18 rooms and almost the same number of bathrooms. Large-scale, independent and entirely self-funded, The House was shot in 4 days with over 25 artists, dancers and models. The project's goal was to highlight the best established and upcoming talent in Australia, and some of the industry's leading professionals.
A disruptive take on art and fashion, The House was partly inspired by Sleep No More, the 1980s art scenes in London and New York (with influences by Keith Haring, Basquiat, Warhol's Factory, Club 57 and anonymous East London parties). The project also pays tribute to Potts Point's cultural heritage, notably the Yellow House, a historical site that changed the area's cultural landscape. At the Yellow House, the house itself was the canvas, every wall, floor, and ceiling. With The House, the same concept applies: most rooms were hand-painted and distressed to look old and weathered, only to be repainted for a different shot on a different day, re-imagined by a collective of contributing artists or brought to life by diverse talent.
About The Yellow House: An artist collective established in the 1970s by Martin Sharp, the Yellow House in Potts Point was utilised as an exhibition space incorporating input from various artists and performers. Visitors included Pink Floyd, Marty Feldman, and David Litvinoff. Modelled after Van Gogh's eponymous house at Arles and drawing into the idea of an artists' community, Sydney's Yellow House was a multi-media performance space thought to have been Australia's first 24-hours 'happening.
